Iron Boulder Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Iron Boulder in a Playthrough

Iron Boulder is a standalone Rock/Psychic Paradox Pokémon introduced in The Indigo Disk and obtainable naturally only in Pokémon Violet; Scarlet players require trade or HOME access from Violet. Like the other Perrin Paradox encounters, it is a single level-75 static Pokémon found only after completing the prerequisite Perrin quest and registering at least 200 species in the Blueberry Pokédex. Its base 120 Attack and exceptional base 124 Speed make it a fast physical attacker, while base 108 Special Defense gives it meaningful resilience against special attacks despite only base 80 Defense. Its signature Mighty Cleave is a 95-base-power, perfectly accurate Rock attack that can strike through moves such as Protect, Detect, Spiky Shield, King's Shield, Baneful Bunker, Silk Trap, and Burning Bulwark, making defensive scouting much less effective against it. Psycho Cut offers perfectly accurate Psychic STAB with an increased critical-hit ratio, while Earthquake, Close Combat, and other coverage can address Steel-, Dark-, Ground-, and opposing Rock-type targets. Swords Dance doubles Attack if Iron Boulder receives a safe turn, and Quark Drive can strengthen a key stat in Electric Terrain or through Booster Energy, with Speed receiving the larger multiplier if it is the boosted stat. Rock/Psychic has a difficult defensive profile with weaknesses to Bug, Dark, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Steel, and Water, so Iron Boulder's high Speed is often more valuable for survival than attempting repeated switches. Jolly is usually ideal to preserve its elite Speed tier, while Adamant can be justified when Booster Energy or outside speed control already handles faster threats.

Iron Boulder in Competitive Pokémon

Iron Boulder is currently UUBL in Scarlet/Violet: it is legal in OU but considered too strong for UU, where it was banned shortly after dropping into the tier in April 2024. Its core offensive package combines base 120 Attack, base 124 Speed, Swords Dance, Booster Energy, and Mighty Cleave, giving it a reliable Rock STAB that also bypasses common protection moves. Earthquake and Close Combat provide exceptionally broad coverage alongside Mighty Cleave, while Psycho Cut or Zen Headbutt can supply secondary STAB depending on whether reliability or power is preferred. The Speed tier is especially valuable in lower-powered environments because Iron Boulder can threaten offense without a Choice Scarf, while Booster Energy can push it beyond most revenge killers or amplify another key stat. During its UU stint, all-out-attacking and Expert Belt variants also proved difficult to handle because prospective checks could be removed by the correct coverage move rather than merely being forced to survive a single predictable Swords Dance set. Its weaknesses explain why it is not an automatic OU staple: seven exploitable defensive weaknesses, only moderate physical bulk, vulnerability to priority, and competition from stronger or more defensively useful offensive Pokémon all reduce its consistency. Iron Boulder's UUBL placement therefore reflects a Pokémon with an oppressive speed-and-coverage package for UU but a more matchup-dependent role at OU power levels.

Iron Boulder in Nuzlockes

Iron Boulder is a strong late-game Violet Nuzlocke attacker when its static encounter is permitted, but its defensive typing makes careful matchup selection essential. Base 124 Speed is its greatest survival asset because it can remove many opponents before taking damage, and Mighty Cleave is particularly safe because it combines high power, perfect accuracy, and the ability to ignore most conventional protection moves. Psycho Cut is also perfectly accurate and has a high critical-hit ratio, making it a lower-variance Psychic option than Zen Headbutt when the reduced power is sufficient. Close Combat should be used selectively because lowering both defenses can leave Iron Boulder exposed on the following turn, while Swords Dance should be attempted only against known opponents that cannot exploit its seven weaknesses. Booster Energy can make Speed-based sweeps especially secure, but the one-use activation does not protect against priority attacks or eliminate the danger of super-effective coverage. Its base 108 Special Defense can absorb many neutral special hits, yet only base 80 Defense and weaknesses to Bug, Dark, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Steel, and Water mean blind physical matchups remain risky. A Jolly set emphasizing Mighty Cleave, accurate coverage, and immediate knockouts is generally safer than attempting to reproduce every aggressive competitive setup.

Iron Boulder Biology and Behavior

Iron Boulder is a robotic bull-like Paradox Pokémon resembling Terrakion, with metallic armor and a pair of large blade-like horns mounted around its head. Those horns can rotate and extend into broad axe-like cutting structures, and Iron Boulder stores concentrated light or laser-like energy in the head before charging through obstacles. It can also imbue the horn blades with psychic power, linking its mechanical weaponry directly to its Psychic typing. When sleeping, Iron Boulder powers down and the orange energy visible across its body and horns goes dark. Its relationship to Terrakion is unresolved: AI Turo describes future Paradox Pokémon as distant descendants, while the Crystal Pool Professor calls them counterparts from other timelines, and the Violet Book records a matching creature long before Turo's machine existed.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
