Using Azelf in a Playthrough

Azelf is the offensive member of the lake trio, combining base 125 Attack, 125 Special Attack, and 115 Speed with Levitate and pure Psychic typing. That stat spread supports physical, special, or mixed offense, though Psychic or Psyshock, Flamethrower or Fire Blast, Thunderbolt, Energy Ball, Shadow Ball, Knock Off, U-turn, and coverage TMs generally make special or mixed sets the easiest to construct. Nasty Plot can double Special Attack and turn Azelf into a devastating sweeper, while Stealth Rock, Taunt, Reflect, Light Screen, and other support moves let its Speed serve utility rather than direct damage. The tradeoff is only 75 HP and 70 in each defense, making Azelf much less forgiving than Uxie or Mesprit when it fails to secure a knockout; Bug, Dark, and Ghost attacks are the principal weaknesses. Timid is an excellent nature for preserving base 115 Speed, while Modest increases special power and Naive or Hasty can support mixed sets when both attacking stats are being used.

Azelf in Competitive Pokémon

Azelf was one of DPP OU's defining leads because base 115 Speed, dual base-125 offenses, Stealth Rock, Taunt, U-turn, screens, and Generation IV Explosion let it establish hazards or support and then trade itself for an opposing Pokemon before many slower leads could respond. The famous suicide lead was only one part of its role: Nasty Plot variants used Psychic with Fire Blast, Grass Knot, or Hidden Power coverage to sweep or break teams, and Choice or mixed sets exploited the fact that both attacking stats were equally strong. Its poor 75/70/70 bulk kept it from functioning as a conventional defensive Pokemon and Pursuit users were dangerous, but few utility leads combined comparable Speed with enough offensive pressure to prevent passive counterplay. Azelf later became a strong UU attacker and utility Pokemon, with SM Smogon highlighting Nasty Plot, broad coverage, and high Speed as defining traits. Its long competitive history is therefore almost the inverse of Uxie's: Azelf sacrifices staying power for immediate tempo, threatening to set hazards, deny opposing support, or simply attack hard before the opponent has time to establish control.

Azelf in Nuzlockes

Azelf can be extremely powerful in a Nuzlocke if legendaries are allowed because base 115 Speed and 125 offenses often let it remove dangerous opponents before they can attack. Levitate provides a Ground immunity and Psychic typing resists Fighting, creating a few clean switch opportunities, but 75/70/70 bulk means Azelf should otherwise be treated much more like a fast attacker than a durable Legendary. Dark, Ghost, and Bug moves are dangerous, priority can bypass the Speed advantage, and mixed or special coverage should be preferred over self-sacrificial competitive habits such as Explosion. Nasty Plot can create decisive sweeps but costs a turn and should be reserved for opponents incapable of threatening Azelf immediately, whereas straightforward attacks are usually safer when they already secure the knockout. Timid is especially useful for preserving the Speed thresholds that make Azelf safe in the first place, but many Nuzlocke rulesets exclude legendary Pokemon entirely, making rule choice more important than its excellent battle statistics.

Azelf is the guardian of Lake Valor and the mythological 'Being of Willpower,' credited with giving humans the determination needed to confront hardship and continue acting in the face of difficulty. It sleeps at the bottom of its lake to preserve the balance of the world, and its spirit can leave the physical body without killing it before later returning. Legends portray Azelf's power over will as potentially terrifying: if harmed, it can remove a person's will entirely and leave them unable to move, while other accounts describe it manipulating the will of opponents like puppets. Azelf is cautious around people and Pokemon but becomes bold and forceful when threatened, and it is capable of teleportation and telepathic communication. Alongside Uxie and Mesprit, it can help create or destroy the Red Chain and participate in restraining an enraged Dialga or Palkia.
