Chespin Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Chespin in a Playthrough
Chespin evolves into Quilladin at level 16 and Chesnaught at level 36, producing a Grass/Fighting physical tank with base 107 Attack, 122 Defense, 88 HP, and only base 64 Speed. Seed Bomb or Wood Hammer and Drain Punch, Hammer Arm, or later Close Combat provide physical STAB, while Spiky Shield, Leech Seed, Spikes, Synthesis, Bulk Up, Earthquake, and Rock coverage let Chesnaught combine defense, recovery, and team support. Overgrow strengthens Grass moves at low HP, while the Hidden Ability Bulletproof grants immunity to a long list of ball- and bomb-based attacks such as Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, Aura Sphere, and Focus Blast. Grass/Fighting offers six useful resistances but also six weaknesses, with Flying dealing quadruple damage, so Chesnaught is strongest when matched deliberately into physical opponents rather than used as a universal wall. Mega Chesnaught keeps Grass/Fighting typing but rises to base 137 Attack, 172 Defense, and 115 Special Defense while falling to base 44 Speed; current ability-enabled play gives it Bulletproof. Impish or Adamant are natural for standard Chesnaught, while Mega Chesnaught can make excellent use of Relaxed, Brave, or other slow bulky natures.
Chespin in Competitive Pokémon
Standard Chesnaught was a strong XY UU defensive Pokemon. Base 122 Defense, Grass/Fighting typing, Spikes, Leech Seed, Synthesis, Spiky Shield, and Bulletproof let it check many physical Water-, Ground-, Rock-, and Dark-type attackers while contributing hazard pressure rather than simply sitting on the field. Smogon described it as one of the tier's best defensive Spikers, although the quadruple Flying weakness and several additional weaknesses made careful matchup selection essential. Mega Chesnaught dramatically raises the family's defensive ceiling in current formats: base 172 Defense, 115 Special Defense, 137 Attack, and Bulletproof turn it into an exceptional bulky Grass/Fighting Pokemon, while the drop to base 44 Speed further encourages slow defensive or Trick Room roles. Current Champions data places Mega Chesnaught in UU, where its enormous physical bulk and access to Synthesis, Spikes, Body Press, Drain Punch, and setup options provide substantial role compression. Neither form is a fast sweeper; their value comes from surviving attacks, denying specific moves, and converting that durability into hazards or steady physical pressure.
Chespin in Nuzlockes
The Chespin line is generally reliable in Nuzlockes because it evolves at normal starter levels and becomes progressively harder to break physically. Chesnaught's base 122 Defense, Synthesis or Leech Seed, and Drain Punch can provide excellent long-term sustain, while Bulletproof can completely invalidate certain dangerous attacks if the Hidden Ability is available. The important drawback is matchup volatility: Flying moves deal quadruple damage, and Fire, Ice, Poison, Psychic, and Fairy are also super effective, so a broad defensive stat line does not make blind switching safe. Spiky Shield is useful for scouting contact attacks and gaining passive recovery turns without requiring damage. Mega Chesnaught becomes dramatically safer against both physical and special neutral attacks thanks to 172 Defense and 115 Special Defense, but its type weaknesses remain unchanged and its lower Speed means it will usually take the first hit.

The quills on its head are usually soft. When it flexes them, the points become so hard and sharp that they can pierce rock.
Such a thick shell of wood covers its head and back that even a direct hit from a truck wouldn’t faze it.

Chespin Biology and Behavior
Chespin has a tough green bark-like shell covering much of its head and back. The quills on its head are normally soft but can be stiffened into sharp defensive weapons, while the shell itself can withstand powerful attacks. Eating large quantities of Berries gradually makes that outer bark tougher. Chespin is naturally curious and optimistic, sometimes getting into trouble because it investigates things without worrying much about the consequences.

Chespin Size Comparison: BETA
Chespin is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Chespin currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
