Gastrodon Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Gastrodon in a Playthrough

Shellos evolves into Gastrodon at level 30, gaining Ground as a secondary type and developing into one of the most defensively useful Water families in the series. Gastrodon's base 111 HP, 82 Special Defense, reliable Recover, and Water/Ground typing leave it with only one ordinary type weakness—Grass, which deals quadruple damage—while providing an Electric immunity and resistances to Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel. Its base 92 Special Attack is strong enough for Surf, Scald in generations where available, Muddy Water, Earth Power, Ice Beam, and other coverage, while 83 Attack also permits Earthquake or Curse variants. Storm Drain is the defining later-generation ability: in Generation IV it primarily redirected single-target Water moves in multi-Pokemon battles, but from Generation V onward it grants complete Water immunity and raises Special Attack whenever a Water move hits it, creating another free switch opportunity. Calm or Bold are excellent straightforward natures for defensive play, and although base 39 Speed guarantees that Gastrodon will usually move last, its combination of bulk, recovery, two immunities with Storm Drain, and useful STAB makes it an exceptionally dependable story Pokemon as long as Grass coverage is carefully avoided.

Gastrodon in Competitive Pokémon

Gastrodon has one of the strongest competitive histories in this batch because its role changed dramatically when Storm Drain was upgraded in Generation V. In DPP it was formally a low-tier Pokemon—Smogon currently classifies it as PU—but Water/Ground typing, Recover, Toxic, Earth Power, and good HP still gave it usable UU and even specialized OU defensive sets, though Swampert often outclassed it. In BW, Storm Drain's new Water immunity and one-stage Special Attack boost propelled Gastrodon all the way to OU, where Smogon identifies it as one of the most reliable answers to offensive rain and an important check to threats such as Rotom-W and Thundurus-T lacking Grass coverage. It continued finding serious niches in later OU, UU, doubles, and VGC environments through Recover, Scald, Clear Smog, Toxic, Ice Beam, Earth Power, and the ability to redirect Water attacks away from partners. Smogon currently lists Gastrodon in SV RU, where it remains a durable defensive utility Pokemon rather than an offensive star; its enduring weakness is equally clear, because any strong Grass move deals quadruple damage and can erase its otherwise excellent defensive profile.

Gastrodon in Nuzlockes

The Shellos line is one of the safer Water encounters for Nuzlockes because Shellos evolves at level 30 and Gastrodon's 111 HP, useful special bulk, recovery, and Water/Ground typing make ordinary neutral exchanges forgiving. Its Electric immunity eliminates one of Water's usual weaknesses, and from Generation V onward Storm Drain adds a Water immunity as well, giving Gastrodon two complete immunities and potentially a free Special Attack boost on the switch. Recover is particularly valuable in permadeath play because it allows safe healing without consuming items and reduces the cumulative risk of entering later battles chipped. The entire defensive plan collapses against Grass attacks, however: the quadruple weakness means even unexpected coverage such as Grass Knot, Energy Ball, or Giga Drain can be fatal, especially because base 39 Speed rarely allows Gastrodon to move first. A Calm or Bold nature can further increase its margin against the side of the attacking spectrum a particular run needs it to cover, but careful knowledge of opposing Grass coverage is more important than any stat investment.

Diamond

It has a pliable body without any bones. If any part of its body is torn off, it grows right back.

Pearl / Y / Alpha Sapphire

It apparently had a huge shell for protection in ancient times. It lives in shallow tidal pools.

Platinum / Black / White / Black 2 / White 2

Long ago, its entire back was shielded with a sturdy shell. There are traces of it left in its cells.

Heartgold / Soulsilver / X / Omega Ruby

When its natural enemy attacks, it oozes purple fluid and escapes.

Sun

It has strong regenerative capabilities. Even if parts of it are bitten off by fish Pokémon, it will return to normal within a few hours.

Moon

Plankton, invisible to the naked eye, is its main food source. It comes onto the land periodically, but the reason for this is not known.

Ultra Sun

Long ago, it had a shell on its back. There’s now a vestigial plate on its back that’s hard but thin.

Ultra Moon

Their shape and color change, depending on their environment and diet. There are many of them at beaches where the waves are calm.

Sword

Its search for food sometimes leads it onto land, where it leaves behind a sticky trail of slime as it passes through.

Shield

The softness of its body helps disperse the force of impacts, so although its body is uncommonly squishy, it’s also surprisingly resilient.

Legends Arceus

Eats beach sand for nourishment. Should one Gastrodon encounter another of a different color, a fierce battle will inevitably ensue.

Gastrodon Biology and Behavior

Gastrodon is a soft-bodied coastal sea slug with remarkable regenerative ability, capable of recovering from severe injuries or even dismemberment within only a few hours. Fossil evidence and anatomical research indicate that its ancestors possessed a substantial shell, but modern Gastrodon retain only a thin, hard vestigial plate on the back. It feeds mainly on plankton but also searches shorelines for other food; when it catches prey, it secretes mucus that melts the victim before eating it, and some individuals even consume beach sand. Gastrodon is vulnerable to dehydration and normally remains around tidal pools, beaches, and rocky shores, yet prolonged rain can make it active far inland or even on distant mountains. West Sea and East Sea Gastrodon are mechanically equivalent but can engage in fierce conflicts when they meet, and population records indicate that West Sea individuals were once much more numerous while East Sea populations have increased in more recent times.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Gastrodon currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
