Floatzel Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Floatzel in a Playthrough
Buizel evolves into Floatzel at level 26, producing a fast pure Water attacker with base 105 Attack and excellent base 115 Speed early enough to influence most of a Sinnoh playthrough. Generation IV's physical/special split immediately benefits the line because Waterfall and Aqua Jet can use Floatzel's higher Attack, while base 85 Special Attack is still good enough for Surf, Ice Beam, or mixed coverage when those moves are useful. Water Veil prevents burns, which is unusually valuable for a physical Water-type because burn would otherwise cripple its Attack, while Swift Swim doubles its already high Speed in rain and enables extremely fast rain offense. Later generations improve Floatzel substantially with stronger tools such as Liquidation, Flip Turn, and especially Wave Crash, though Wave Crash's recoil makes its enormous power costly in ordinary play. Jolly can exploit Floatzel's excellent Speed while Adamant boosts physical damage, but even without a favorable nature the line is one of Sinnoh's most efficient offensive Water choices because it evolves reasonably early, requires little setup, and combines strong Speed with immediate STAB pressure.
Floatzel in Competitive Pokémon
Floatzel has spent most of its competitive history in lower tiers, but its exceptional Speed has repeatedly made it dangerous within those environments. DPP UU analyses treated it as a threatening attacker and one of the fastest Swift Swim users, while BW Smogon lists it in NU and describes it as the fastest Water-type in that tier, capable of physical, special, or mixed offense through Water STAB, Ice coverage, Fighting coverage, and rain. In SM it became one of ZU's strongest Water-types because base 115 Speed outran most of the unboosted tier while its 105 Attack and usable 85 Special Attack made set prediction difficult. Generation IX gave Floatzel Wave Crash and Flip Turn, greatly increasing both immediate wallbreaking power and momentum; Smogon currently lists it in SV PU, where Choice Band Wave Crash is a defining offensive option and Swift Swim can make it extraordinarily difficult to revenge kill in rain. Its long-term weaknesses remain the same—55 Defense, 50 Special Defense, susceptibility to Electric and Grass attacks, and heavy recoil from its strongest modern move—so Floatzel succeeds through tempo and Speed rather than defensive staying power.
Floatzel in Nuzlockes
The Buizel line is highly effective in Nuzlockes because it evolves at level 26 and Floatzel's base 115 Speed prevents many opponents from attacking at all once a clean knockout is available. Pure Water typing has only Grass and Electric weaknesses, and Water Veil removes burn as a source of both residual damage and Attack reduction, making physical damage output unusually predictable. Aqua Jet provides priority when even base 115 Speed is not enough, while Waterfall offers reliable physical STAB without self-damage and Surf can still be useful when field progression or special targeting matters. The main weakness is poor defensive bulk: 85 HP helps somewhat, but 55 Defense and 50 Special Defense mean a failed damage calculation or surprise coverage move can be fatal despite the simple typing. Wave Crash is extraordinarily strong in later games but its recoil is much less attractive under permadeath rules, so Floatzel is generally safest when its Speed is used to avoid incoming damage rather than trading health for maximum power.

Floatzel Biology and Behavior
Floatzel's flotation sac becomes much more developed after evolution and is described as an adaptation produced by generations of pursuing aquatic prey. It can deflate the sac to dive and reinflate it to surface, and the buoyancy is powerful enough to keep Floatzel from drowning even in stormy seas. The species does not use these abilities only for hunting: Floatzel living near fishing communities are known to rescue drowning people, carrying victims on their inflated bodies like living rafts. Its twin tails remain functional propellers for rapid swimming, while the longer limbs make it more capable on land than Buizel without sacrificing aquatic specialization. Floatzel therefore occupies both a predatory ecological role and a cooperative relationship with coastal humans, using the same flotation anatomy to chase prey and save lives.

Floatzel Size Comparison: BETA
Floatzel is listed at 3' 7" (1.1 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Floatzel currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
