Vespiquen Vespiquen Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Vespiquen in a Playthrough
Combee is an awkward early-stage Pokemon because only females can evolve, and female Combee make up just one-eighth of the species; a female evolves into Vespiquen at level 21, while a male Combee can never evolve. Vespiquen has respectable 70 HP and excellent base 102 Defense and Special Defense, but base 40 Speed and Bug/Flying typing make those defenses less reliable than they initially appear because Rock attacks deal quadruple damage and Fire, Electric, Ice, and Flying attacks are also super effective. Its signature Attack Order provides dependable physical Bug STAB with an increased critical-hit ratio, while Defend Order raises both defensive stats and older games also gave Vespiquen the signature healing move Heal Order; Roost and utility moves can further support a defensive style where available. Pressure complements that role by draining extra PP from attacks directed at Vespiquen, while the Hidden Ability Unnerve prevents opponents from consuming Berries. A Careful or Impish nature can reinforce Vespiquen's defensive role, but the difficult female-only evolution requirement, very low Speed, and severe Rock weakness mean the line is usually a specialized bulky option rather than one of Sinnoh's easiest playthrough choices.
Vespiquen in Competitive Pokémon
Vespiquen has never been a major high-tier competitive Pokemon, but it possessed a legitimate defensive niche in DPP despite being tiered in ZU by modern Smogon classifications. DPP analyses emphasized its unusual combination of 102/102 defenses, Pressure, reliable recovery, Toxic, Substitute, Roost, and Attack Order, allowing it to stall low-PP attacks and punish selected Grass-, Fighting-, and Ground-type opponents. The problem is structural rather than statistical: Bug/Flying gives Vespiquen a quadruple Rock weakness, and once Stealth Rock became central to singles it could lose half of its maximum HP merely by switching into the field. Later access to Heavy-Duty Boots can remove that entry-hazard damage in formats where the item is available, but base 40 Speed, poor offensive pressure, and numerous common weaknesses still make stronger defensive Bug- and Flying-types easier to justify. Smogon continues to place Vespiquen around ZU-level relevance in Generation IX, so its historical identity is best described as a creative lower-tier Pressure wall rather than an overlooked top-tier threat.
Vespiquen in Nuzlockes
The Combee family is unusually encounter-dependent in Nuzlockes because a male Combee is permanently stuck with extremely low stats, while only the much rarer female can evolve into Vespiquen at level 21. Once evolved, Vespiquen's 102 Defense and 102 Special Defense provide a healthy cushion against neutral attacks, and a Ground immunity plus strong resistances to Grass and Fighting create useful planned switching opportunities. The quadruple Rock weakness is the defining danger: Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Ancient Power, or even weaker Rock coverage can overwhelm Vespiquen's impressive defenses, and its base 40 Speed usually prevents it from escaping damage by attacking first. Defend Order and recovery can make favorable battles very safe, while Pressure can deplete dangerous limited-PP moves, but prolonged stalling also creates more opportunities for critical hits unless the matchup is tightly controlled. For permadeath play, the line is therefore valuable only when the player successfully obtains a female and treats Vespiquen as a matchup-specific defensive specialist rather than a universal wall.

Vespiquen Biology and Behavior
Vespiquen is a female-only queen that rules a colony of Combee through pheromones, with stronger pheromone production associated with command over larger numbers of workers. It gives birth to and raises Combee grubs, feeds on flowers to produce honey for its young, and normally allows the workers to handle defense before personally intervening when the hive is seriously threatened. Its abdomen functions as a nursery and hive structure, and modern animated material has depicted young Pokemon being raised within it. Vespiquen can be brutally protective of its colony, destroying and feeding on intruders caught sneaking into the hive, yet it has also been shown rewarding outsiders who prove themselves by defending the colony. Its signature Order moves reflect this social biology directly: rather than attacking or defending entirely by itself, Vespiquen commands members of the hive as coordinated extensions of the queen's will.

Vespiquen Size Comparison: BETA
Vespiquen is listed at 3' 11" (1.2 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
