Shieldon Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Shieldon in a Playthrough

Shieldon is restored from the Armor Fossil in games where that fossil is available and evolves into Bastiodon at level 30. Bastiodon's 168 Defense and 138 Special Defense are enormous, but base 60 HP, 30 Speed, and extremely weak offenses mean it wins through resistance, support, and patience rather than quickly overpowering opponents. Rock/Steel provides many resistances and a Poison immunity, yet the defensive profile is polarized by quadruple weaknesses to both Fighting and Ground plus a Water weakness; from Generation VI onward Steel also loses its old Ghost and Dark resistances while gaining Fairy resistance. Sturdy became dramatically more useful beginning in Generation V because a full-health Bastiodon can survive an otherwise fatal hit with 1 HP, while the Hidden Ability Soundproof blocks sound-based moves and later access to Body Press finally lets its gigantic Defense contribute directly to damage. Impish or Careful are natural defensive natures, but Bastiodon remains a specialist whose matchups must be chosen carefully rather than a universal wall.

Shieldon in Competitive Pokémon

Bastiodon has never become a high-tier competitive wall despite its spectacular defensive stats because its typing, tiny offensive presence, and lack of reliable recovery give opponents several ways to exploit it. In DPP lower-tier analysis, Smogon emphasized Stealth Rock, Toxic, Roar, Taunt, Torment, and especially Metal Burst, which can return one and a half times the damage Bastiodon just received and takes advantage of its very low Speed. Its 168 Defense and 138 Special Defense make neutral attacks look harmless on paper, but common Fighting- and Ground-type moves deal quadruple damage and can overwhelm even those numbers, while Water pressure and passive damage further reduce longevity. Later generations improved Sturdy and eventually gave Bastiodon Body Press, allowing it to use its Defense offensively, while Soundproof provides a useful immunity to sound moves in applicable formats. Even with those improvements Smogon continues to place Bastiodon in low tiers such as ZU, where it can function as a niche special wall or hazard setter but is rarely preferable to bulkier Pokemon with better recovery, typing, or offensive pressure.

Shieldon in Nuzlockes

Bastiodon can be exceptionally safe in the right Nuzlocke matchup because few Pokemon combine 168 Defense, 138 Special Defense, a long resistance list, and modern Sturdy's one-hit survival insurance. That safety disappears against Fighting and Ground attacks, which are quadruple effective, and its base 30 Speed means Bastiodon usually has to absorb the attack before it can react; an unexpected Close Combat or Earthquake can therefore be disastrous. Sturdy is most dependable when Bastiodon enters battle at full HP, so entry hazards, residual status, weather damage, or chip from a previous fight can remove the guarantee before it matters. Metal Burst can eliminate dangerous attackers but requires Bastiodon to take damage first and is therefore much riskier than it is in competitive play, whereas Body Press in later games lets it exploit its Defense without deliberately accepting a hit. Bastiodon is best used as a matchup-specific wall against opponents whose coverage is known, not as a blind pivot merely because its defensive numbers are enormous.

Platinum / Black / White / Black 2 / White 2

It is outstandingly armored. As a result, it can eat grass and berries without having to fight.

Heartgold / Soulsilver / Y / Alpha Sapphire

It was generated from a fossil dug out of a layer of clay that was older than anyone knows. It has a sturdy face.

Sun

Many fossils of this Pokémon have been found, but almost none have shown signs of damage to the face.

Moon

This Pokémon lived in primeval jungles. Few enemies would have been willing to square off against its heavily armored face, so it’s thought.

Ultra Sun

A mild-mannered, herbivorous Pokémon, it used its face to dig up tree roots to eat. The skin on its face was plenty tough.

Ultra Moon

Although its fossils can be found in layers of primeval rock, nothing but its face has ever been discovered.

Legends Arceus

Much remains unknown about this Pokémon, as few have ever seen it. However, we know that it is calm and dislikes conflict, and it enjoys polishing its face against trees and rocks.

Shieldon Biology and Behavior

Shieldon lived in dense forests and primeval jungles roughly 100 million years ago, feeding peacefully on grass, tree roots, and Berries rather than hunting other Pokemon. Its dark facial plate is extraordinarily hard and fossil specimens show no evidence of damage to the face, while the rest of the body—especially from behind—is much less protected. Shieldon habitually polishes its face against tree trunks, maintaining the surface of the armor that gives the species its name. Despite its formidable defensive anatomy, it is mild-mannered and dislikes conflict, suggesting that the shield evolved primarily to discourage attacks rather than support an aggressive lifestyle. Modern individuals are usually revived from Armor Fossils, though living populations have also been established in protected artificial habitats.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
