Araquanid Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Araquanid in a Playthrough

Dewpider evolves into Araquanid at level 22, making this one of the fastest-developing Alola lines and allowing the final evolution to contribute for most of a normal playthrough. Araquanid's defining trait is Water Bubble: it doubles the power of its Water-type attacks, prevents burns, and halves incoming Fire-type damage, so its modest base 70 Attack produces Water damage far beyond what the raw stat suggests. Liquidation is therefore exceptionally strong and reliable STAB, while Leech Life provides secondary Bug STAB and useful recovery; Sticky Web, Lunge, Mirror Coat, Wide Guard, and other support options can add value depending on the game and format. Its base 132 Special Defense is outstanding and base 92 Defense is respectable, but base 68 HP and especially base 42 Speed mean Araquanid tends to absorb an attack before responding. Water/Bug gives useful resistances to Fighting, Ground, Ice, Steel, and Water and only three weaknesses—Electric, Flying, and Rock—while Water Bubble further reduces Fire damage despite Bug's normal weakness to that type. Adamant is the clearest Nature for maximizing physical Water Bubble attacks in a standard playthrough, while Brave is a genuine alternative on deliberately slow or Trick Room teams.

Araquanid in Competitive Pokémon

Araquanid's competitive niche has always been much stronger than base 70 Attack would imply because Water Bubble effectively doubles the strength of its Water STAB while also preventing burns and improving its defensive matchup against Fire attacks. In Generation VII it was an RU Pokémon and one of the tier's better Sticky Web setters, combining real offensive pressure from Liquidation with enough special bulk to set Webs more than once rather than functioning only as a suicide lead. It also had a documented VGC 2017 niche as a slow Trick Room attacker: Water Bubble made Hydro Vortex exceptionally powerful, burn immunity protected its physical offense, and Wide Guard or other support let it contribute beyond raw damage. In Sword and Shield it was PUBL but retained useful NU and Monotype roles as a specially bulky Water attacker and Sticky Web user, while Scarlet and Violet currently place it in PU, where Choice Band, Sticky Web, and Water Bubble remain the core reasons to use it. Its persistent flaws are low Speed, a Stealth Rock weakness, no reliable full recovery, and extremely one-dimensional offense outside Water attacks; Grass- or Water-resistant opponents can often exploit the weakness of its non-Water coverage. Pokémon Champions has created a striking but very recent change: Smogon's current Champions dex lists Araquanid in OU with a Sticky Web set, so it presently has much higher placement in that young format than it ever sustained in traditional singles, although that result should be treated as developing history rather than proof of a long-term OU reputation.

Araquanid in Nuzlockes

Araquanid is a strong Nuzlocke Pokémon because it evolves early, has unusually good special bulk, and gains several forms of risk reduction from Water Bubble without requiring any setup. Burn immunity prevents one of the most dangerous long-term status conditions for physical attackers, while the Ability's Fire-damage reduction turns a matchup that would otherwise be neutral from Water/Bug's combined typing into a much safer one. Its Fighting, Ground, Ice, Steel, and Water resistances give it numerous switch opportunities when movesets are known, and Leech Life can recover health while dealing damage instead of forcing a completely passive healing turn. The major danger is Speed: base 42 means Araquanid commonly has to absorb an attack first, so an unexpected Electric-, Flying-, or Rock-type coverage move can be lethal before it gets the chance to retaliate. Liquidation is especially attractive for permadeath play because it is accurate, very strong after Water Bubble, and does not impose recoil or defensive drops. Water Absorb can create a true Water immunity if the Hidden Ability is obtained, but Water Bubble is usually the safer all-purpose Nuzlocke Ability because it combines burn immunity, Fire mitigation, and the enormous Water-STAB boost in a single package.

Sun

It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown.

Moon

Despite what its appearance suggests, it cares for others. If it finds vulnerable, weak Pokémon, it protectively brings them into its water bubble.

Ultra Sun

It usually passes its time in the water. When its belly is full, it stores its subdued prey in the water bubble on its head.

Ultra Moon

It has a habit of storing things it values in its water bubble. If its Trainer doesn’t watch out, Araquanid will try to put them in its bubble!

Sword

It launches water bubbles with its legs, drowning prey within the bubbles. This Pokémon can then take its time to savor its meal.

Shield

It acts as a caretaker for Dewpider, putting them inside its bubble and letting them eat any leftover food.

Araquanid Biology and Behavior

Araquanid uses the large water bubble surrounding its head as a weapon, storage chamber, protective enclosure, and nursery. It can launch sticky water bubbles from its legs to trap prey; small Pokémon may drown inside, and recent Pokédex material describes unconscious prey being torn apart by Araquanid's jaws after capture. When it is not hungry, Araquanid may store subdued prey in the head bubble for later instead of consuming it immediately. The same structure is also used benevolently: Araquanid brings vulnerable Pokémon and valued objects into the bubble for protection, and adults carry Dewpider children inside while sharing leftover food with them. This combination of predatory behavior and direct parental care makes Araquanid unusually complex ecologically, using the same adaptation both to kill prey and to shelter weaker members of its environment.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Araquanid currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
