Cottonee Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Cottonee in a Playthrough

Cottonee evolves into Whimsicott with a Sun Stone. In Generation V both stages are pure Grass, but from Generation VI onward the family becomes Grass/Fairy, gaining a Dragon immunity, several useful additional resistances, and a quadruple Poison weakness. Whimsicott has only base 77 Special Attack but excellent base 116 Speed and a deep support movepool including Tailwind, Encore, Taunt, Leech Seed, Stun Spore, Cotton Guard, Sunny Day, U-turn, and later Moonblast. Prankster gives status moves +1 priority and is the line's defining ability; from Generation VII onward, Dark-type opponents are immune to opposing Prankster-boosted status moves that target them. Infiltrator lets attacks and status bypass Substitute and screens, while Chlorophyll doubles Speed in sun. Timid is the most natural nature for offensive or fast-support sets, though Bold or Calm can support bulkier play; Whimsicott's real strength is controlling tempo rather than dealing large amounts of direct damage.

Cottonee in Competitive Pokémon

Whimsicott has one of Generation V's most enduring support identities because Prankster gives priority to an enormous collection of non-damaging moves. In BW RU, Smogon highlighted Encore, Taunt, Stun Spore, Memento, Tailwind, and weather support as the core of its niche, allowing Whimsicott to disrupt setup and provide speed control despite poor offensive stats. Generation VI added Fairy typing and Moonblast, giving it meaningful offensive pressure against Dragon-, Dark-, and Fighting-types while improving its defensive profile. Its doubles résumé is even stronger: across multiple VGC generations, Prankster Tailwind, Encore, Taunt, Helping Hand, Sunny Day, Fake Tears, and other support have made Whimsicott a recurring hyper-offense staple, and modern VGC analyses still describe it as a reliable priority Tailwind setter. In singles its tier placement has moved downward over time, but the underlying competitive identity remains consistent—Whimsicott wins games by acting before faster threats and manipulating their options rather than through raw damage.

Cottonee in Nuzlockes

Whimsicott can be extremely useful in Nuzlockes because Prankster lets it use Tailwind, Encore, Taunt, status, or other utility before most opponents can act. From Generation VI onward, Grass/Fairy also grants a Dragon immunity and useful resistances to Fighting, Dark, Water, Grass, Ground, and Electric, although the new typing creates a quadruple Poison weakness plus Fire, Ice, Flying, and Steel weaknesses. Its 60 HP and merely average defenses mean those weaknesses can still lead to sudden deaths, so support should be used from favorable matchups rather than expecting Whimsicott to tank neutral hits. Encore can lock an opponent into a harmless setup or status move and create very safe turns, but its value depends on knowing what the opponent just selected. Timid Whimsicott is best used to control the battle for stronger teammates rather than trying to become the team's primary damage dealer.

When attacked, it escapes by shooting cotton from its body. The cotton serves as a decoy to distract the attacker.

They go wherever the wind takes them. On rainy days, their bodies are heavier, so they take shelter beneath big trees.

Black 2 / White 2 / Y / Alpha Sapphire

Perhaps because they feel more at ease in a group, they stick to others they find. They end up looking like a cloud.

Sun

When it finds others of its kind, they all stick together. When enough of them have collected, the mass resembles a cumulonimbus cloud.

Moon

Pillows and beds stuffed with cotton exhaled by Cottonee are soft and puffy, light and airy— altogether top quality.

Ultra Sun

To protect itself, it shoots cotton from its body. When it gets wet in the rain, its cotton grows moist and heavy, and it can’t move as well.

Ultra Moon

When attacked, it expels cotton from its body to create a diversion. The cotton it loses grows back in quickly.

Sword

It shoots cotton from its body to protect itself. If it gets caught up in hurricane-strength winds, it can get sent to the other side of the Earth.

Shield

Weaving together the cotton of both Cottonee and Eldegoss produces exquisite cloth that’s highly prized by many luxury brands.

Cottonee Biology and Behavior

Cottonee is so light that ordinary wind carries it through the air, and groups gather together on the breeze during mating season. Rain soaks the cotton and makes the Pokemon too heavy to drift, causing it to shelter beneath trees until it dries. When threatened, Cottonee sheds cotton as a distraction and escapes while the lost material rapidly regrows. Its cotton is valuable to humans for extremely soft bedding and, when woven together with Eldegoss cotton, luxury fabrics.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
