Phione Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Phione in a Playthrough
Phione is a single-stage pure Water Pokemon with exactly base 80 in every stat, giving it balanced but thoroughly modest performance and no single attribute strong enough to carry difficult battles. Hydration cures status at the end of each turn while rain is active, allowing combinations such as Rain Dance and Rest to provide much more dependable recovery than Phione's raw stats would suggest. Surf or Scald in generations where available supplies reliable Water STAB, while Ice Beam, U-turn, Acid Armor, Rain Dance, and the modern move Take Heart provide limited offensive or support options. Phione does not evolve into Manaphy even though the species are reproductively connected; breeding Manaphy or another Phione with Ditto produces Phione Eggs, making acquisition unusually dependent on already having access to a rare Mythical Pokemon in many games. A Bold or Calm nature can make rain-support sets more durable, but Phione is generally much weaker than ordinary fully evolved Water-types and is best viewed as a specialized Hydration user rather than a strong playthrough choice.
Phione in Competitive Pokémon
Phione has spent nearly its entire competitive history in the lowest tiers because base 80 across the board provides neither meaningful offensive pressure nor exceptional bulk. Its one durable niche has been Hydration rain support: in DPP and especially BW lower-tier play, Phione could set Rain Dance, use Rest to heal to full and immediately wake through Hydration, then U-turn into a stronger rain attacker while remaining healthy enough to repeat the process later. Smogon lists Phione in BW ZU and describes rain support as essentially the only role it performs effectively, with Scald or Toxic occupying the remaining slot rather than any serious attempt to sweep. Later generations did little to change that evaluation; SM analyses regarded it as practically unviable and outclassed even within its narrow rain-setting role, and modern SV Smogon still lists it in ZU. Take Heart gives current Phione a useful self-boosting and status-clearing option, but the underlying 80/80/80/80/80/80 stat line keeps it from developing the offensive or defensive ceiling of Manaphy.
Phione in Nuzlockes
Phione is reasonably predictable in a Nuzlocke because pure Water typing leaves only Grass and Electric weaknesses and its defenses are all respectable rather than extremely uneven. Hydration can be excellent if the team already uses rain, allowing status to disappear automatically and making Rest much safer in generations where the combination is available. The problem is that base 80 offenses often fail to secure quick knockouts, extending battles and increasing exposure to critical hits or unexpected coverage despite otherwise acceptable bulk. Its acquisition is also unusual enough that many standard Nuzlockes will never encounter one naturally, and rulesets that ban Mythical Pokemon exclude it immediately. If used, Phione is safest as a rain-support or utility Pokemon rather than being asked to trade neutral attacks with stronger fully evolved opponents.

Phione Biology and Behavior
Phione lives in warm seas and inflates the flotation sac on its head so it can drift across the surface while searching for food. Groups of Phione float together when the water becomes warm. No matter how far an individual drifts, Pokédex records say it eventually returns to the place where it was born.

Phione Size Comparison: BETA
Phione is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
