Manaphy Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Manaphy in a Playthrough
Manaphy is a single-stage pure Water Mythical with base 100 in every stat, giving it excellent all-around performance and far more flexibility than its offspring species Phione. Surf, Scald in applicable games, Ice Beam, Energy Ball, Psychic, Shadow Ball, and other coverage provide broad special offense, while Tail Glow is the defining setup move: it raised Special Attack by two stages in Generation IV and by three stages from Generation V onward. Hydration cures status at the end of each turn in rain, creating the famous Rain Dance or Drizzle plus Rest combination in which Manaphy heals completely and immediately wakes, while the newer Take Heart simultaneously cures status and raises Special Attack and Special Defense by one stage. Pure Water typing leaves only Grass and Electric weaknesses and provides useful Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel resistances, making its perfectly even 100/100/100 bulk more effective than the raw numbers alone suggest. Timid is excellent when preserving the base-100 Speed tier matters and Modest improves immediate special damage, but in the original Sinnoh games Manaphy was not a normal wild encounter and ordinarily required transferring a special Manaphy Egg from Pokémon Ranger.
Manaphy in Competitive Pokémon
Manaphy entered DPP as an Uber despite having only a 600 base stat total, because Tail Glow, Hydration, balanced base-100 stats, and rain support gave it a combination of setup, bulk, and status immunity that ordinary OU teams struggled to contain. In DPP Ubers it faced severe competition from Kyogre and Palkia, but Hydration plus Rest let it heal completely in rain without remaining asleep and Tail Glow allowed it to boost faster than those stronger Water-types. Generation V made Tail Glow dramatically stronger by increasing the boost from +2 to +3 Special Attack, and Manaphy became such an oppressive rain-enabled stallbreaker that it was banned from BW OU. It later competed successfully in formats such as SM OU, where Tail Glow and Hydration again made it one of the tier's strongest stallbreakers, and modern SV Smogon places it in UUBL while still supporting potent OU Tail Glow and Take Heart sets. Manaphy's defining strength is not any one base stat but the interaction between perfectly balanced stats, rapid setup, broad coverage, status control, and rain-supported recovery, allowing it to change from a durable Water-type into a major win condition in a single turn.
Manaphy in Nuzlockes
If Mythical Pokemon are permitted, Manaphy is an extremely safe all-purpose Water-type because every stat is base 100 and pure Water typing leaves only Grass and Electric weaknesses. Hydration can eliminate status entirely under rain and, with Rest, can restore Manaphy to full health without the usual two turns of sleep, while modern Take Heart provides a safer setup option that cures status and raises both Special Attack and Special Defense without sacrificing HP. Tail Glow is tremendously powerful, but spending a turn setting up is unnecessary when a direct attack already guarantees the knockout, and the strongest competitive rain strategies should still be used with normal permadeath caution. Manaphy's original acquisition through an event-linked Pokémon Ranger Egg places it outside many conventional Sinnoh Nuzlockes even before Mythical restrictions are considered. When allowed, Timid is particularly useful because moving first with strong Water coverage often prevents damage more reliably than trying to exploit its good but not exceptional defenses.

Manaphy Biology and Behavior
Manaphy is born on a cold seafloor and can swim enormous distances to return to its birthplace. Roughly 80 percent of its body is water, making the species unusually sensitive to the condition of its surrounding environment. It is born with a mysterious ability that allows it to form bonds with any kind of Pokemon. Manaphy can reproduce with Ditto, but the resulting Eggs hatch into Phione rather than additional Manaphy, and the exact biological relationship between the two species remains incompletely understood.

Manaphy Size Comparison: BETA
Manaphy is listed at 1' 0" (0.3 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Manaphy currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
