Cresselia Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Cresselia in a Playthrough
Cresselia is a single-stage Psychic Legendary built almost entirely around durability, with Levitate, base 120 HP, and historically enormous defensive stats; from Generation IX onward its Defense and Special Defense were reduced to 110 and 120 respectively, but it remains exceptionally difficult to knock out with neutral attacks. Psychic, Ice Beam, Moonblast in later games, and occasional coverage provide modest offense, while Moonlight, Calm Mind, Thunder Wave, Reflect, Light Screen, Trick Room, and Lunar Dance give Cresselia far more value as a defensive or support Pokemon than as a direct attacker. Levitate creates a complete Ground immunity, leaving Bug, Ghost, and Dark as its ordinary weaknesses, although pure Psychic typing provides relatively few resistances in return. Moonlight is excellent reliable healing in neutral weather but becomes weaker in rain, sand, or snow and stronger in harsh sunlight, so its consistency changes with the battle environment. Bold or Calm are natural natures for defensive use, and while Cresselia can make many story battles extremely safe if legendary Pokemon are permitted, its low offensive pressure means it often wins through control and endurance rather than quick knockouts.
Cresselia in Competitive Pokémon
Cresselia was classified as UUBL in DPP but maintained a serious OU niche because its original 120/120/130 bulk, Levitate, Rest, Ice Beam, Thunder Wave, Reflect, Light Screen, and Lunar Dance made it one of the generation's most difficult Pokemon to break through directly. Smogon described it as the bulkiest Pokemon in DPP OU and highlighted its ability to counter mixed Dragon-types such as Dragonite and Flygon, although Tyranitar, Scizor, Jirachi, Heatran, sand damage, and Cresselia's own passivity created major structural weaknesses. It remained useful in later singles generations and became particularly notable on sun teams in BW, where Moonlight restored more HP and Cresselia could check dangerous physical attackers while providing support. Generation IX reduced Defense from 120 to 110 and Special Defense from 130 to 120, and modern Smogon places Cresselia in NUBL, but Lunar Dance, Thunder Wave, Moonlight, Trick Room, and its still-excellent mixed bulk continue to give it utility. Its competitive identity has remained remarkably consistent: Cresselia rarely threatens teams through raw damage, but it can absorb enormous punishment, disrupt opponents, and sacrifice itself with Lunar Dance to completely restore a teammate when that trade is strategically worthwhile.
Cresselia in Nuzlockes
If legendary Pokemon are allowed, Cresselia is one of the safest defensive encounters available because Levitate provides a Ground immunity and its enormous HP and defensive stats give it a large margin against neutral attacks. Bug, Ghost, and Dark moves are the principal threats, and strong physical Dark attacks deserve particular respect because Cresselia's pure Psychic typing provides no secondary type to soften them. Moonlight greatly improves long-term safety, although weather can reduce the amount healed, and Thunder Wave or screens can make difficult boss fights safer for the entire team without requiring Cresselia to deal large amounts of damage itself. Lunar Dance should normally be avoided in a Nuzlocke because it causes Cresselia to faint in order to restore the next Pokemon sent out, turning an excellent competitive support move into a deliberate permanent loss. Bold or Calm further improve its already excellent defensive profile, but many Nuzlocke rulesets exclude legendary encounters entirely.

Cresselia is reminiscent of the crescent moon. It leaves a brilliant line of light in its wake as it flies across the night sky. I daresay it resembles the heavenly maiden who created the Milky Way.

Cresselia Biology and Behavior
Cresselia is strongly associated with the crescent moon and releases shining particles from its wing-like structures as it flies, while the aurora-like tail becomes especially prominent on nights around the quarter moon. Its feathers, known as Lunar Feathers, are said to guarantee joyful dreams and can dispel nightmares caused by Darkrai. Legends: Arceus compares the trail of light behind a flying Cresselia to a heavenly maiden crossing the night sky. The species therefore appears in Sinnoh mythology as a benevolent lunar counterpart to Darkrai's association with moonless nights and nightmares.

Cresselia Size Comparison: BETA
Cresselia is listed at 4' 11" (1.5 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Cresselia currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
