Seel Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Seel in a Playthrough

The Seel line develops into Dewgong, a balanced Water/Ice Pokemon with respectable overall bulk but only moderate offensive stats. Water and Ice STAB provide useful coverage against Fire-, Ground-, Rock-, Flying-, Grass-, and Dragon-type opponents, while Thick Fat from Generation III onward further reduces damage from Fire- and Ice-type attacks. Dewgong's main limitation is that it rarely excels at a specific role: its offenses are modest, its Speed is average, and many games provide stronger or more specialized Water-types. Its value rises when dependable Ice coverage is particularly important, but it generally functions as a durable all-purpose Water-type rather than a sweeper.

Seel in Competitive Pokémon

Dewgong has historically occupied lower competitive tiers, where its combination of respectable mixed bulk, Water/Ice typing, and utility moves gives it specialized defensive roles. Smogon analyses have used options such as Perish Song, Encore, Rest, and status or trapping strategies to exploit passive opponents rather than relying on Dewgong's modest offensive stats. Thick Fat provides additional defensive utility against Fire- and Ice-type attacks, while alternative abilities such as Hydration or Ice Body have supported weather-dependent strategies in applicable generations. Competition from stronger bulky Water-types and the defensive weaknesses of Water/Ice typing have prevented Dewgong from maintaining significant higher-tier viability.

Seel in Nuzlockes

Dewgong is a relatively safe but rarely dominant Nuzlocke Pokemon, with balanced defenses and Water/Ice typing allowing it to handle many ordinary opponents without relying on setup. Its Ice STAB can be particularly valuable against late-game Dragon-types, while Thick Fat provides additional protection against Fire and Ice attacks in generations where the ability is available. FireRed and LeafGreen community analysis generally places Dewgong around the middle of the field: its bulk and STAB combination are useful, but base 70 offenses and competition from Water-types such as Cloyster, Golduck, and Tentacruel reduce its overall value. It is best viewed as a dependable specialist when Ice coverage or additional bulk is needed rather than as a Pokemon that automatically justifies a permanent team slot.

Seel Biology and Behavior

Seel is highly adapted to frigid oceans, with thick hide and insulating fur allowing it to swim in water as cold as -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Its nostrils close while swimming, and it uses the horn on its forehead together with its tusks to break through ice floes. Seel becomes more active as temperatures decrease and tires more quickly in warm water. It generally sleeps during the day and hunts beneath sheets of ice later in the day and evening, while its body is much more graceful in water than on land.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
