Sudowoodo Sudowoodo Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Sudowoodo in a Playthrough
The Bonsly line develops into Sudowoodo, an extremely slow but physically sturdy Rock-type built around high Defense and respectable physical Attack. Bonsly evolves when it levels up while knowing Mimic, while games set before Bonsly's introduction simply provide Sudowoodo directly; Johto notably treats Sudowoodo as a one-time overworld encounter blocking the player's path until it is sprayed with water. Sudowoodo's base 100 Attack and 115 Defense let it handle many physical Normal-, Flying-, Fire-, and Poison-type opponents effectively, and later movepools provide powerful options such as Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Head Smash, Earthquake, Wood Hammer, Low Kick, and Sucker Punch. Rock Head can remove recoil from attacks such as Head Smash and Wood Hammer where applicable, while the modern version of Sturdy can guarantee survival from full HP and give Sudowoodo a chance to retaliate against a stronger opponent. Its extremely low base 30 Speed and weaknesses to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel mean it must be used selectively, because strong special attacks or common super-effective coverage can overwhelm it before it acts.
Sudowoodo in Competitive Pokémon
Sudowoodo has rarely escaped the lowest competitive tiers, but it possesses several legitimate tools that make it more dangerous than its comical appearance suggests. Its most aggressive identity uses base 100 Attack with Rock Head and Head Smash, allowing it to throw out extremely powerful Rock STAB without suffering the move's enormous recoil; Wood Hammer, Earthquake, Fighting coverage, and Sucker Punch can punish several common switch-ins. In later generations the upgraded Sturdy ability also enables lead or emergency-check sets that survive a hit from full HP and use Stealth Rock, Counter, Endeavor, or priority to trade favorably with a stronger opponent. The central problem is that base 30 Speed, mediocre special bulk, and pure Rock typing make Sudowoodo much easier to pressure than stronger Rock-type wallbreakers or hazard setters. Competitive analyses therefore tend to treat it as a specialized lower-tier wallbreaker or utility lead whose unusual move and Ability combinations are useful, but rarely efficient enough to overcome its structural weaknesses.
Sudowoodo in Nuzlockes
Sudowoodo can be a valuable Nuzlocke encounter because high physical Defense and strong Attack give it a clear role against physical Fire-, Flying-, Normal-, and Poison-type opponents. In Johto the famous road-blocking Sudowoodo is also a controlled one-time encounter rather than a random grass roll, making it possible for many rulesets to plan around obtaining one if the player chooses to catch it. Its biggest danger is Speed: Sudowoodo almost always takes a hit before moving, and Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, or Steel attacks can be fatal despite its excellent physical Defense, especially when the attack is special. From Generation V onward, Sturdy becomes extremely valuable in permadeath play because a full-health Sudowoodo cannot be knocked out by a single ordinary hit, although entry hazards, weather, prior chip damage, and multi-hit moves can remove that protection. Bonsly should generally be evolved before difficult battles, but once evolved the line can provide a dependable physical answer as long as the player treats its many weaknesses and terrible Speed with appropriate caution.

Apparently, the larger the green parts of this Pokémon, the more collectors value it. It’s a particular favorite among elderly people.
It’s so popular with the elderly that there’s a magazine devoted to this Pokémon. Fans obsess over the particular length and angle of its arms.
The result of its holding the same pose all the time is arms that have become supple yet strong.

Though it pretends to be a tree, it fails to fool even children. To the touch, its body feels more like rock than tree bark. Sudowoodo's extreme aversion to water merits special note.

Sudowoodo Biology and Behavior
Sudowoodo disguises itself as a tree by standing almost perfectly still along forest paths, but its body is composed more like rock than plant tissue and is correspondingly hard and durable. Water immediately exposes the deception: Sudowoodo strongly dislikes moisture and abandons its tree pose to flee for shelter when rain begins, while winter can also ruin the camouflage because its green forelegs remain conspicuous when real trees have lost their leaves. Spending such long periods posed as a tree has left its thin arms surprisingly supple and strong, and some people admire the species so intensely that magazines and enthusiasts judge individual Sudowoodo by the angle and length of their arms. Sudowoodo can maintain its mimicry even while asleep, although individuals occasionally abandon the upright pose and sleep normally on the ground. Its entire survival strategy is therefore built around an elaborate contradiction: a Rock-type animal that imitates vegetation so faithfully that it must flee from the very water a real tree would need.

Sudowoodo Size Comparison: BETA
Sudowoodo is listed at 3' 11" (1.2 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Sudowoodo currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
