Bonsly Bonsly Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Bonsly in a Playthrough
The Bonsly line develops into Sudowoodo, an extremely slow but physically sturdy Rock-type built around high Defense and respectable physical Attack. Bonsly evolves when it levels up while knowing Mimic, while games set before Bonsly's introduction simply provide Sudowoodo directly; Johto notably treats Sudowoodo as a one-time overworld encounter blocking the player's path until it is sprayed with water. Sudowoodo's base 100 Attack and 115 Defense let it handle many physical Normal-, Flying-, Fire-, and Poison-type opponents effectively, and later movepools provide powerful options such as Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Head Smash, Earthquake, Wood Hammer, Low Kick, and Sucker Punch. Rock Head can remove recoil from attacks such as Head Smash and Wood Hammer where applicable, while the modern version of Sturdy can guarantee survival from full HP and give Sudowoodo a chance to retaliate against a stronger opponent. Its extremely low base 30 Speed and weaknesses to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel mean it must be used selectively, because strong special attacks or common super-effective coverage can overwhelm it before it acts.
Bonsly in Competitive Pokémon
Sudowoodo has rarely escaped the lowest competitive tiers, but it possesses several legitimate tools that make it more dangerous than its comical appearance suggests. Its most aggressive identity uses base 100 Attack with Rock Head and Head Smash, allowing it to throw out extremely powerful Rock STAB without suffering the move's enormous recoil; Wood Hammer, Earthquake, Fighting coverage, and Sucker Punch can punish several common switch-ins. In later generations the upgraded Sturdy ability also enables lead or emergency-check sets that survive a hit from full HP and use Stealth Rock, Counter, Endeavor, or priority to trade favorably with a stronger opponent. The central problem is that base 30 Speed, mediocre special bulk, and pure Rock typing make Sudowoodo much easier to pressure than stronger Rock-type wallbreakers or hazard setters. Competitive analyses therefore tend to treat it as a specialized lower-tier wallbreaker or utility lead whose unusual move and Ability combinations are useful, but rarely efficient enough to overcome its structural weaknesses.
Bonsly in Nuzlockes
Sudowoodo can be a valuable Nuzlocke encounter because high physical Defense and strong Attack give it a clear role against physical Fire-, Flying-, Normal-, and Poison-type opponents. In Johto the famous road-blocking Sudowoodo is also a controlled one-time encounter rather than a random grass roll, making it possible for many rulesets to plan around obtaining one if the player chooses to catch it. Its biggest danger is Speed: Sudowoodo almost always takes a hit before moving, and Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, or Steel attacks can be fatal despite its excellent physical Defense, especially when the attack is special. From Generation V onward, Sturdy becomes extremely valuable in permadeath play because a full-health Sudowoodo cannot be knocked out by a single ordinary hit, although entry hazards, weather, prior chip damage, and multi-hit moves can remove that protection. Bonsly should generally be evolved before difficult battles, but once evolved the line can provide a dependable physical answer as long as the player treats its many weaknesses and terrible Speed with appropriate caution.

It prefers an arid atmosphere. It leaks water that looks like tears when adjusting its moisture level.
In order to adjust the level of fluids in its body, it exudes water from its eyes. This makes it appear to be crying.
It does not deal well with water, so it lives in dry locales. Since its surroundings tend to lack greenery, it stands out noticeably.
From its eyes, it can expel excess moisture from its body. This liquid is similar in composition to human sweat.
It discharges moisture from its eyes, making it look like it’s crying—apparently an effective way of getting enemies to let down their guard.
If its body gets too damp, it will die. So, in a process reminiscent of sweating, its eyes expel moisture.
It expels both sweat and tears from its eyes. The sweat is a little salty, while the tears have a slight bitterness.
This Pokémon lives in dry, rocky areas. As its green spheres dry out, their dull luster increases.
Its tears elicit sympathy from those who see them, but do not be deceived! This expulsion of body water is merely a physiological mechanism for keeping itself in good health.

Bonsly Biology and Behavior
Bonsly resembles a small potted tree but is biologically much closer to stone, and remaining too wet is actually dangerous enough to threaten its life. Its famous crying is therefore not usually an expression of sadness: Bonsly expels excess moisture from its body through both tears and sweat in order to maintain a safe internal fluid balance. The sweat is described as slightly salty and the tears as somewhat bitter, while the constant appearance of crying can have the secondary effect of making potential enemies lower their guard. Bonsly can remain motionless for long periods while imitating a bonsai tree, though its disguise is much less convincing in dry landscapes where there is little surrounding vegetation. It naturally favors dry, rocky environments and becomes healthier as the green spheres on its head lose moisture and develop a duller appearance.

Bonsly Size Comparison: BETA
Bonsly is listed at 1' 8" (0.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
