Marill Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Marill in a Playthrough
The Azurill line changes enormously depending on generation because several major mechanics eventually transformed Azumarill from a modest Water-type into a powerful physical attacker. Azurill evolves into Marill through high friendship, while Marill evolves at the very early level of 18; in games where the player encounters Marill directly, the family can therefore reach Azumarill with very little delay. In Generation II Azumarill lacked Abilities and its Water attacks were special, leaving its low offensive stats poorly suited to direct damage, but from Generation III onward Huge Power can effectively double its Attack and the Generation IV physical/special split finally allows physical Water moves to use that strength. Generation VI improves the line again by making Marill and Azumarill Water/Fairy, adding Fairy STAB, a Dragon immunity, and useful resistances while moves such as Play Rough, Aqua Jet, Waterfall or Liquidation, and broad physical coverage give Azumarill a clear offensive identity. Its base 50 Speed remains a major limitation, but good 100/80/80 bulk and priority options allow Azumarill to succeed without consistently moving first.
Marill in Competitive Pokémon
Azumarill is one of the clearest examples of an Ability completely redefining a Pokemon's competitive identity. Huge Power doubles its Attack, turning an apparently unimpressive base 50 Attack stat into the foundation of a genuinely powerful wallbreaker, and the physical/special split later gave it strong Water attacks that could finally exploit that power directly. The addition of Fairy typing in Generation VI pushed Azumarill into major OU relevance by giving it excellent Water/Fairy STAB, a Dragon immunity, strong defensive utility, and access to Play Rough. Its two most famous offensive approaches are Choice Band, which applies immediate pressure, and Belly Drum combined with a Sitrus Berry and Aqua Jet, which can raise its Attack to extreme levels and then bypass its poor Speed with priority. Azumarill's low Speed, vulnerability to Grass-, Electric-, and Poison-type attacks, and dependence on Huge Power for most physical sets remain important limitations, but it has repeatedly maintained competitive value through the rare combination of bulk, priority, typing, and enormous effective Attack.
Marill in Nuzlockes
The Marill line can be an outstanding Nuzlocke family, but its strength depends heavily on both generation and Ability. A Huge Power Marill or Azumarill gains dramatically more offensive value than a Thick Fat individual, while the line becomes even safer from Generation VI onward because Water/Fairy typing supplies a Dragon immunity and useful resistances to Fighting, Dark, Fire, Water, Ice, and Bug attacks. Azumarill's large HP pool and solid defenses let it survive many neutral hits, and Aqua Jet in games where it is available provides valuable priority that can finish weakened opponents without exposing Azumarill to another attack. Its low Speed nevertheless means it often has to take damage before attacking, so powerful Electric, Grass, or Poison coverage can still produce sudden losses; in earlier generations Grass is particularly dangerous because Fairy typing is not yet present to reshape the defensive profile. Azurill itself is much weaker and should generally be evolved through friendship before being exposed to serious battles, but once the line reaches Azumarill it can provide an unusually strong combination of offense and survivability.

MARILL’s oil-filled tail acts much like a life preserver. If you see just its tail bobbing on the water’s surface, it’s a sure indication that this POKéMON is diving beneath the water to feed on aquatic plants.

Its body is covered with water-repellent fur. Because of the fur, it can swim through water at high speed without being slowed by the water’s resistance.

Even after Marill swims in a cold sea, its water- repellent fur dries almost as soon as Marill leaves the water. That’s why this Pokémon is never cold.

Marill Biology and Behavior
Marill is a semiaquatic Pokemon whose zigzagging tail ends in an oil-filled ball that acts as a natural buoy, allowing Marill to remain afloat even in strong water. Its fur repels water and greatly reduces resistance while swimming, letting it move efficiently through currents that would hinder many similarly sized animals. The flexible tail can stretch, and Marill may anchor the buoyant tip along a riverbank while the rest of its body enters the water to feed. Marill has highly sensitive ears capable of detecting distant sounds and feeds on aquatic vegetation as well as food gathered from the water. Its combination of waterproof fur, flotation, sensitive hearing, and a flexible tail makes almost every prominent part of its anatomy useful for life around rivers and lakes.

Marill Size Comparison: BETA
Marill is listed at 1' 4" (0.4 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Marill currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
