Tapu Fini Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Tapu Fini in a Playthrough

Tapu Fini is a single-stage Water/Fairy Legendary obtained after the Alola League in its debut games, but when available it functions as the most defensively oriented of the four guardian deities. Its base 115 Defense and 130 Special Defense combine with an excellent Water/Fairy typing that grants a Dragon immunity and resistances to Bug, Dark, Fighting, Fire, Ice, and Water, leaving only Electric, Grass, and Poison weaknesses. Misty Surge automatically creates Misty Terrain, preventing grounded Pokémon from receiving major status conditions and halving Dragon-type damage against them, which can make entire boss strategies substantially safer. Moonblast and Surf provide accurate STAB, while Calm Mind can compensate for its merely base 95 Special Attack; Taunt, Haze, Defog, Nature's Madness, and other utility allow it to solve problems that cannot be handled by damage alone. Its most important practical flaw is the absence of strong reliable recovery: Leftovers, Draining Kiss, Aqua Ring, or Rest-based strategies are much less convenient than Recover, and Misty Terrain itself prevents grounded Tapu Fini from using Rest successfully while the terrain is active. Bold and Calm are both excellent Natures depending on whether the team wants to emphasize physical or special durability, while Modest can be reasonable for a more straightforward story attacker.

Tapu Fini in Competitive Pokémon

Tapu Fini was an OU staple in both Generation VII and Sword and Shield and was also one of the defining defensive Water-types of VGC 2017, giving it arguably the broadest combination of singles and doubles success among the guardian deities. Misty Terrain made it exceptional team support by shielding grounded allies from burn, poison, paralysis, sleep, and confusion while also weakening incoming Dragon attacks, and Water/Fairy typing let Tapu Fini check prominent Dark-, Fighting-, Fire-, and Dragon-type threats. In Generation VII OU, Defog, Taunt, Nature's Madness, Calm Mind, and Choice sets all saw use, allowing it to remove hazards, break passive walls, or become a win condition rather than acting as a single-purpose tank. VGC 2017 prominently featured Calm Mind and bulky support variants, with Misty Terrain contesting the other tapu's terrains and protecting entire teams from disruptive status strategies. Sword and Shield preserved Tapu Fini's OU status, where it checked threats such as Urshifu-R and Weavile and used Taunt, Trick, Calm Mind, or Whirlpool, although the lack of reliable recovery made Knock Off and accumulated chip especially troublesome. Unlike Koko, Lele, and Bulu, its signature terrain was not defined by a same-type damage multiplier, so the Generation VIII terrain-power nerf did not directly reduce Tapu Fini's principal defensive function.

Tapu Fini in Nuzlockes

Tapu Fini is one of the safest defensive Pokémon available to a permissive Nuzlocke because its excellent mixed defenses, Dragon immunity, six resistances, and Misty Terrain collectively remove many common sources of unexpected loss. Misty Terrain prevents major status conditions on grounded Pokémon, so burns, poison, sleep, paralysis, and confusion cannot derail a planned sequence while the terrain is active, and Dragon attacks are simultaneously weakened. Moonblast and Surf are accurate STAB options, while Haze can erase dangerous enemy setup and Taunt can prevent recovery or status strategies without exposing Tapu Fini to unreliable accuracy. Its main endurance problem is the lack of Recover or a comparable immediate healing move; once Leftovers are removed or repeated neutral hits accumulate, even Tapu Fini's excellent defenses can be worn down across a long route. Misty Terrain also prevents grounded Tapu Fini from falling asleep, so Rest cannot simply be used as a conventional recovery button while its own terrain remains active. Electric-, Grass-, and Poison-type attacks still require careful respect, but compared with many defensive Pokémon Tapu Fini provides unusually strong protection against both direct damage and status-based variance.

Tapu Fini Biology and Behavior

Tapu Fini is the guardian deity of Poni Island and resides at the Ruins of Hope, drawing energy from ocean currents and exercising direct control over water. It creates a mysterious mist that can disorient opponents so severely that they attack themselves, allowing Tapu Fini to avoid exposing its own body unnecessarily in battle. The same mist protects access to special water said to cleanse anything unclean, and Tapu Fini tests people who seek that water rather than granting it freely; repeated attempts by selfish humans have left the guardian deeply distrustful of people. Accounts nevertheless describe it helping those who prove worthy, making its relationship with humans selective rather than purely hostile. In animation, Tapu Fini's mist can bridge the world of the living with the dead, allowing people to encounter deceased loved ones, but remaining in that mist too long risks trapping a person there permanently. Like the other guardian deities, it protects its island from Ultra Beasts and participates in Alola's larger spiritual and cosmological traditions.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.

Tapu Fini currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
