Using Altaria in a Playthrough
Swablu evolves into Altaria at level 35, trading its early Normal/Flying typing for Dragon/Flying and developing into a much bulkier, more utility-oriented Pokemon than its modest offensive stats initially suggest. Altaria's base 90 Defense and 105 Special Defense let it absorb many neutral attacks comfortably, while Natural Cure removes major status conditions whenever it switches out and makes burns, paralysis, poison, or sleep much less persistent during a long adventure. In Generation III, Dragon attacks are special and Flying attacks are physical, which fits Altaria's equal base 70 offensive stats reasonably well; later generations give it stronger options such as Dragon Pulse, Dragon Claw, Roost, Dragon Dance, and improved Flying attacks. Dragon/Flying provides a Ground immunity, a quadruple Grass resistance, and useful Fire, Water, Fighting, and Bug resistances, but the line must respect a severe quadruple Ice weakness alongside Rock and Dragon weaknesses, with Fairy added from Generation VI onward. Mega Altaria completely changes the matchup profile by becoming Dragon/Fairy, removing the quadruple Ice weakness, gaining a Dragon immunity, raising both offensive stats to 110, and using Pixilate to turn Normal-type attacks into stronger Fairy-type STAB.
Altaria in Competitive Pokémon
Altaria was already a legitimate ADV UU Pokemon because its good mixed bulk, Natural Cure, Rest, Toxic, Haze, Perish Song, and other support options made it unusually difficult for status-based teams to wear down. Natural Cure creates a particularly strong interaction with Rest: Altaria can fully heal and fall asleep, then immediately cure that sleep by switching out, allowing it to recover without remaining inactive for the normal sleep duration. Dragon Dance also gives base Altaria an offensive route, but modest base 70 Attack and a quadruple Ice weakness have usually prevented it from becoming a top-tier sweeper in stronger formats. Mega Altaria dramatically raised the family's competitive ceiling with Dragon/Fairy typing, base 110 Attack and Special Attack, improved physical bulk, Roost, Dragon Dance, and Pixilate-boosted Normal moves that become powerful Fairy attacks. In Generation VII UU, Mega Altaria was considered one of the tier's best Pokemon because it could operate as a bulky Dragon Dance sweeper, mixed attacker, defensive pivot, or stallbreaker depending on its set, making prediction unusually difficult.
Altaria in Nuzlockes
The Swablu line can be a very safe Nuzlocke option once it reaches Altaria because good mixed bulk, Natural Cure, and several useful resistances provide a much larger margin for error than most Flying-types. Swablu itself is relatively weak before level 35, so the main challenge is protecting it through a fairly long evolution period rather than using it as an immediate powerhouse. Natural Cure is exceptional in permadeath play because accidental burns, poison, paralysis, sleep, or other major status conditions can be removed simply by switching, conserving healing items and preventing long-term attrition. The quadruple Ice weakness is the defining danger for ordinary Altaria, and even weak Ice coverage can become lethal despite its otherwise strong defenses; Rock, Dragon, and later Fairy attacks also require care. Mega Altaria is substantially safer against Ice and completely immune to Dragon, but new Poison, Steel, and Fairy weaknesses mean it still rewards checking opposing coverage rather than relying blindly on its improved typing.

Altaria Biology and Behavior
Altaria drifts through the sky on buoyant, cloudlike wings, catching updrafts and gliding among real clouds while singing in a clear soprano voice. That voice has an almost supernatural emotional effect: listeners are described as entering a dreamy state of wonder when they hear Altaria's melodies from high overhead or deep in remote mountains. The species is normally gentle and highly affectionate, wrapping trusted people in its soft wings, but can become unexpectedly fierce when provoked and attack with shrill cries, powerful beak strikes, or intensely hot fireballs. Mega Evolution greatly increases the volume and strength of its down; the feathers remain extraordinarily soft to the touch while becoming strong enough that only a few strands could reportedly lift a dump truck. Mega Altaria's singing is described as even more beautiful than the ordinary form's, reinforcing the unusual combination of physical strength, aerial grace, and voice-based emotional influence that defines the species.

Altaria Size Comparison: BETA
Altaria is listed at 3' 7" (1.1 m); this chart uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
Altaria currently uses a pose-adjusted visual scale.
