Mamoswine Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Mamoswine in a Playthrough
The Swinub line develops into a powerful Ice/Ground physical attacker, but its effectiveness changes dramatically across generations. Swinub evolves into Piloswine at level 33, and in Generations II and III Piloswine is the final stage; Ground attacks such as Earthquake already use its strong Attack in those games, but Ice attacks are special before Generation IV and therefore do not take advantage of its better physical offense. From Generation IV onward, a Piloswine that levels up while knowing Ancient Power evolves into Mamoswine, gaining base 130 Attack, 110 HP, and enough Speed to function as an imposing wallbreaker rather than merely a slow bulky attacker. Physical Ice options such as Ice Shard, Ice Fang, Icicle Crash, and later Icicle Spear pair naturally with Ground STAB, giving Mamoswine excellent coverage against Dragon-, Flying-, Grass-, Electric-, Ground-, Rock-, and Steel-related matchups depending on the move being used. Its main drawback is a broad weakness profile—Fire, Water, Grass, Fighting, and Steel all hit it super effectively—so Mamoswine is strongest when its excellent offensive coverage and Electric immunity are used proactively rather than as an excuse to absorb unknown attacks.
Mamoswine in Competitive Pokémon
Mamoswine immediately established a serious competitive niche when it debuted in Generation IV, reaching OU through the combination of base 130 Attack and an Ice/Ground STAB pairing that very few Pokemon could switch into safely. Earthquake provides extremely reliable Ground damage while physical Ice STAB threatens Dragons, Ground-types, Flying-types, and Grass-types, and Ice Shard gives Mamoswine valuable priority that compensates for its only moderate base 80 Speed. Later generations added Thick Fat as a Hidden Ability, effectively reducing damage from Fire and Ice attacks and giving Mamoswine more opportunities to enter battle despite its otherwise awkward defensive typing. Choice Band, Life Orb, Stealth Rock, Focus Sash lead, and mixed utility sets have all appeared across generations because Mamoswine combines immediate power with useful priority and an Electric immunity. Its weaknesses to common Water-, Grass-, Fighting-, Steel-, and Fire-type attacks, plus mediocre Special Defense, prevent it from functioning as a conventional tank, but its offensive typing has kept it relevant well beyond the generation in which it was introduced.
Mamoswine in Nuzlockes
The Swinub line can become an excellent Nuzlocke attacker, especially from Generation IV onward when Mamoswine exists and physical Ice attacks align with its enormous Attack. Its high HP and respectable physical bulk provide more room for error than many Ice-type attackers, while the Electric immunity creates predictable safe switches and Ice Shard can finish weakened enemies without allowing them another turn. The danger is that Ice/Ground is weak to all three traditional starter types—Fire, Water, and Grass—as well as Fighting and Steel, so Mamoswine can encounter super-effective coverage in many otherwise unrelated battles. Swinub and Piloswine also require patience before reaching their strongest form, with Piloswine evolving at level 33 and Mamoswine requiring access to Ancient Power in games where that evolution exists. Used against known Electric-, Dragon-, Flying-, Ground-, or other favorable targets, Mamoswine can be one of the strongest Nuzlocke finishers available, but its large weakness list makes blind switching unnecessarily risky.

It looks strong, and that’s exactly what it is. As the weather grows colder, its ice tusks grow longer, thicker, and more impressive.
This species reached its zenith during the period known as the ice age. I suspect that Hisui's frigid climate is in harmony with Mamoswine's constitution, thus awakening hidden potential.

Mamoswine Biology and Behavior
Mamoswine is an Ice Age survivor covered in exceptionally thick fur and armed with enormous tusks made of solid ice, which grow longer and more impressive as temperatures fall. The species once flourished across much of the world during the last ice age but became far less common as the climate warmed and permanent ice receded. Its tolerance of cold and starvation is extraordinary: a Mamoswine frozen for roughly ten thousand years was reportedly revived after being excavated, demonstrating a level of suspended survival far beyond that of most living creatures. Mamoswine remains associated with frozen mountains and tundra, where its strength allows it to force paths through deep snow; humans in Kalos even use trained individuals as mounts to cross otherwise impassable winter terrain. Despite its size and power, Mamoswine is not beyond predation, with Weavile documented as one of its natural predators.

Mamoswine Size Comparison: BETA
Mamoswine is listed at 8' 2" (2.5 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
