Evolution Chain

Mareanie evolves into Toxapex at level 38.

Mareanie Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Mareanie in a Playthrough

Mareanie evolves into Toxapex at level 38, which is a fairly late evolution for a Pokémon whose main strength lies in the final stage's defenses rather than immediate offensive power. In Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Mareanie is also awkward to obtain because it appears through SOS Battles called by wild Corsola rather than as an ordinary encounter, so acquiring one can require deliberate hunting; Sword, Shield, and Scarlet/Violet make the species much easier to encounter directly. Toxapex has only base 50 HP but enormous base 152 Defense and 142 Special Defense, and Poison/Water grants eight resistances while leaving only Electric, Ground, and Psychic weaknesses, making it one of the most dependable defensive Pokémon available in games that permit it. Its drawback is extremely poor offense and base 35 Speed, so ordinary trainer battles can become slow unless status, stronger teammates, or favorable super-effective attacks are used to make progress. Recover, Toxic or Toxic Spikes, Haze, and Baneful Bunker give it excellent defensive utility depending on the generation, while Regenerator is its outstanding Hidden Ability because switching restores one third of its maximum HP; in Alola, however, obtaining the Hidden Ability requires more effort than simply catching the first Mareanie that appears. Bold and Calm are both genuinely useful Natures for emphasizing physical or special walling respectively, but a normal story playthrough does not require perfect optimization for Toxapex to be extraordinarily difficult for most neutral attackers to break.

Mareanie in Competitive Pokémon

Toxapex was one of the defining defensive Pokémon of both Generation VII and Generation VIII singles, immediately establishing itself in OU rather than slowly climbing from the lower tiers. Its success came from an unusually complete defensive package: immense mixed defenses, excellent Poison/Water typing, Regenerator, Recover, Haze, Toxic Spikes, Scald, Toxic, and historically Knock Off allowed it to wall or scout large portions of the metagame while continually generating chip damage or removing resources. In Sun and Moon OU it was among the most splashable defensive Pokémon in the tier, checking threats such as Ash-Greninja, Volcarona, and Mega Charizard Y while also absorbing opposing Toxic Spikes; Sword and Shield preserved that status, where Regenerator pivoting, Knock Off, Scald burns, and Haze made it extraordinarily difficult to wear down cleanly. Generation IX finally reduced that dominance: Recover's base PP was cut from 10 to 5 and standard Scarlet/Violet Toxapex lost the old combination of Scald and Knock Off that had allowed it to punish so many switch-ins, making it substantially more passive. That decline is reflected in its current Scarlet/Violet placement in UU, even though its raw bulk, Regenerator, Toxic Spikes, Haze, and defensive typing still give it serious value on slower teams. Pokémon Champions has produced a new, very recent chapter: as of 2026 Smogon's Champions dex lists Toxapex in OU, where the format's different item and threat environment again rewards its ability to repeatedly wall attackers and regenerate health, but that result is too new to treat as the same kind of long-established reputation it earned in Generations VII and VIII.

Mareanie in Nuzlockes

Toxapex is one of the safest defensive Pokémon a Nuzlocke can offer once it is obtained and evolved, but the line's acquisition and slow development matter much more in permadeath play than they do in competitive analysis. In the Alola games, Mareanie's SOS-only appearance through Corsola makes the encounter unreliable and potentially costly in time or resources, and level 38 leaves a long period in which the player must protect the much less impressive first stage. Once evolved, Poison/Water typing, huge mixed defenses, Recover, and especially Regenerator when available create enormous switching safety and let Toxapex scout movesets without being permanently worn down by every neutral hit. Haze is valuable insurance against enemy setup, Baneful Bunker can safely scout contact moves while potentially poisoning attackers, and immunity to poison prevents one common form of long-term attrition. The major danger is that Toxapex's terrible offensive stats make battles last longer, exposing it to more critical hits, status attempts, and unexpected coverage than a faster Pokémon that simply secures the knockout; strong Ground, Electric, and Psychic attacks therefore still need to be respected. Generation IX's reduced Recover PP lowers its long-battle margin somewhat, but Regenerator remains excellent for conserving recovery resources when switching is safe.

Sun

It plunges the poison spike on its head into its prey. When the prey has weakened, Mareanie deals the finishing blow with its 10 tentacles.

Moon

It’s found crawling on beaches and seafloors. The coral that grows on Corsola’s head is as good as a five-star banquet to this Pokémon.

Ultra Sun

They eat Corsola branches, so Mareanie are hated by craftsmen who work with Corsola branches that have naturally fallen off.

Ultra Moon

Aside from its head, its body parts regenerate quickly if they’re cut off. After a good night’s sleep, Mareanie is back to normal.

Sword

The first symptom of its sting is numbness. The next is an itching sensation so intense that it’s impossible to resist the urge to claw at your skin.

Shield

Unlike their Alolan counterparts, the Mareanie of the Galar region have not yet figured out that the branches of Corsola are delicious.

Mareanie Biology and Behavior

Mareanie lives on beaches and seafloors in groups and hunts by poisoning prey with the spike on top of its head before trapping or finishing it with its ten tentacles. Its most famous prey is Corsola: the coral branches on Corsola's head are described as a delicacy, and Alolan Mareanie are hated by craftsmen who value naturally shed Corsola branches. The ecological relationship is mechanically reflected in the Alola games, where Mareanie can appear when Corsola calls for help in an SOS Battle and may attack the Corsola that summoned it instead of the player's Pokémon. Nearly every part of Mareanie except its head can regenerate overnight after being severed, although the regenerated or detached limbs have an intensely bitter, astringent taste and are unsuitable as food. Mareanie will also attempt to eat broken Pincurchin spines despite sometimes receiving electric shocks, while Bruxish is itself a predator of Mareanie. Its venom causes numbness followed by severe itching, giving the species a well-defined predatory and defensive ecology rather than merely a generic Poison-type theme.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
