Lumineon Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage
Using Lumineon in a Playthrough
Finneon evolves into Lumineon at level 31, producing a pure Water Pokemon with base 91 Speed and respectable base 86 Special Defense but only 69 in both attacking stats, so the line is better at utility and safe type matchups than at dealing heavy neutral damage. Surf or Scald in applicable generations provides reliable special Water STAB, while Waterfall can use the equally modest Attack and Ice Beam, U-turn, Toxic, Defog, Rain Dance, Tailwind, and Aqua Ring give it broader support options depending on the game. Swift Swim doubles Speed in rain and can make Lumineon extremely fast, while Storm Drain changed substantially across generations: in Generation IV it redirects single-target Water moves in multi-Pokemon battles, but from Generation V onward it grants a Water immunity and raises Special Attack when activated. The later Hidden Ability Water Veil prevents burns, which is useful but usually less distinctive than the complete Water immunity and offensive boost of modern Storm Drain. Lumineon's Speed and simple Water typing make it perfectly usable in a story, but low offenses and the abundance of stronger Water-types mean it is normally a role-filler rather than a standout; a Timid nature can preserve its best natural stat when using special attacks and utility.
Lumineon in Competitive Pokémon
Lumineon has never been a strong standard singles Pokemon, and its competitive history is primarily a record of trying to find support niches that justify using it over stronger Water-types. In BW NU, Smogon described it as badly outclassed because it lacked offensive pressure, reliable recovery, and strong defensive stats; Rain Dance or Tailwind with U-turn and Toxic gave it some team support, but even those jobs were generally performed better by alternatives. Later generations gave Lumineon a more coherent niche through Defog, Scald, U-turn, and the upgraded Storm Drain, allowing it to remove hazards, pivot, spread burns or poison, and switch freely into Water attacks. In SM it remained a ZU-level Pokemon and was still considered inferior to options such as Swanna and Silvally-Water, though Storm Drain at least gave it a specific advantage when teams needed both hazard removal and a Water immunity. Its respectable base 91 Speed is the one statistic that consistently helps it perform those jobs, but base 69 offenses and the lack of reliable recovery have prevented Lumineon from developing a serious high-tier competitive résumé.
Lumineon in Nuzlockes
Lumineon is reasonably safe but rarely dominant in Nuzlockes because pure Water typing has only Grass and Electric weaknesses, base 91 Speed lets it move first against many ordinary opponents, and base 86 Special Defense provides some cushion against neutral special attacks. From Generation V onward, Storm Drain is particularly valuable because it creates a complete Water immunity and can raise Special Attack at the same time, giving the player a predictable free switch against known Water moves; Water Veil instead eliminates burn as a source of chip and Attack reduction. The line's main issue is that base 69 offenses often fail to secure quick knockouts, lengthening battles and creating more opportunities for critical hits or secondary effects despite otherwise adequate bulk. Rain-boosted Swift Swim can reduce that risk through overwhelming Speed, but Lumineon still needs enough damage to finish the target, and manual Rain Dance itself costs a turn. It is safest as a fast utility Water-type or Storm Drain pivot rather than being expected to overpower difficult neutral bosses.

Lumineon Biology and Behavior
Lumineon usually lives in the deep ocean and can walk along the seafloor using the fins on its chest, a behavior that helps it remain hidden from predators rather than swimming constantly through open water. The pale patterns edging its large butterfly-like fins produce light, and Lumineon flashes those fins to lure prey through the darkness. That display is dangerous because it can also attract larger, more ferocious fish Pokemon that prey upon Lumineon itself. Schools of Lumineon compete with Lanturn for food, including Staryu and Starmie, placing two bioluminescent Water families in direct ecological competition. Although individuals sometimes appear near the surface, the mature species is fundamentally adapted to a dark deep-sea environment where light functions simultaneously as lure, signal, and potential advertisement to predators.

Lumineon Size Comparison: BETA
Lumineon is listed at 3' 11" (1.2 m) and shown in an in-chart visual comparison.

How is visual size determined?
Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.
For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.
The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
