Forms

Rayquaza Playthrough, Competitive, and Nuzlocke Usage

Using Rayquaza in a Playthrough

Rayquaza is a Dragon/Flying super-ancient legendary with base 150 Attack and Special Attack, 105 HP, and 95 Speed, giving it one of the most naturally versatile offensive stat lines in Hoenn. Air Lock suppresses the effects of weather while Rayquaza is active, allowing it to ignore many strategic benefits created by Kyogre's rain or Groudon's sun and making it an unusually effective answer to weather-dependent opponents. In Generation III, Dragon attacks are special while Flying attacks are physical, so Rayquaza can exploit both offensive stats naturally; Dragon Dance, Extreme Speed, Earthquake, Fire coverage, and later Draco Meteor or stronger physical Dragon moves make its movepool exceptionally difficult to predict. Mega Rayquaza requires Dragon Ascent rather than a conventional Mega Stone in the classic Mega system, meaning it can Mega Evolve while still holding another useful item, and its stats rise to base 180 Attack and Special Attack with 115 Speed. Delta Stream weakens attacks that would normally be super effective specifically because of Flying typing, reducing Rayquaza's devastating Ice weakness from quadruple to double and neutralizing the Flying component of Rock and Electric damage while the strong winds remain.

Rayquaza in Competitive Pokémon

Rayquaza was already a major ADV Uber wallbreaker and sweeper because dual base-150 offenses, Extreme Speed, Dragon Dance, Choice Band, and vast mixed coverage made it nearly impossible to predict from team preview alone. Later generations strengthened both physical and special Dragon offense, while Dragon Ascent finally gave Rayquaza an extraordinarily powerful Flying STAB that matched its offensive stats. Mega Rayquaza fundamentally broke the usual Mega Evolution tradeoff: it gains 180 Attack, 180 Special Attack, 115 Speed, Delta Stream, and enormous bulk improvements without needing to hold a Mega Stone, leaving the item slot free for Life Orb, Choice items, or other power boosts. It became so powerful that Smogon's Generation VI Ubers tier banned Mega Rayquaza itself, leading to its placement in Anything Goes rather than merely Ubers—a landmark event in competitive tiering. Even there, Mega Rayquaza remained a dominant wallbreaker and setup threat through Dragon Dance, Swords Dance, Extreme Speed, Dragon Ascent, and vast coverage; its few checks generally rely on faster threats, powerful priority, or forcing it to take enough chip before it can sweep.

Rayquaza in Nuzlockes

Rayquaza is one of the strongest possible Nuzlocke captures because both offensive stats are base 150 and its movepool can remove most threats before they have time to exploit its merely average defenses. Air Lock can simplify dangerous weather battles by suppressing rain, sun, hail, sand, and their associated effects while Rayquaza remains active. The defining danger is the quadruple Ice weakness in ordinary form, along with Rock, Dragon, and later Fairy weaknesses; Ice Beam or Ice Shard can be lethal despite Rayquaza's legendary status. Mega Rayquaza improves Speed and defenses while Delta Stream reduces the severity of Flying-derived weaknesses, making it far safer, but it still takes double damage from Ice because Dragon remains weak to Ice. Its enormous offensive ceiling makes overconfidence the main practical risk: checking coverage remains worthwhile even when most opponents can be eliminated in a single turn.

Rayquaza Biology and Behavior

Rayquaza has lived for hundreds of millions of years in the ozone layer, where it survives by consuming water, atmospheric particles, meteoroids, Mega Stones, and even Minior while remaining almost completely unseen by people below. Its body can survive beyond the atmosphere and breathe in space, and from the ground a flying Rayquaza can be mistaken for a meteor rather than a living creature. The Draconid people worshipped it as Hoenn's savior because it repeatedly intervened when Groudon and Kyogre threatened the natural balance, forcing even their Primal forms back into dormancy. Rayquaza also treats extraterrestrial Deoxys as an invader of its territory and the two have repeatedly clashed in space. Its body contains a special 'mikado organ' that stores energy from consumed meteorites and functions like an internal Mega Stone; in Mega form, glowing filaments manipulate air density and humidity, and Mega Rayquaza is powerful enough to destroy enormous incoming meteors and reverse the Primal transformations of Groudon and Kyogre.

How is visual size determined?

Pokédex height is treated as the official listed measurement, but the chart uses pose-aware visual scaling so each sprite looks reasonable in a direct comparison.

For long or coiled Pokémon, the listed height may represent total body length rather than upright height. For Pokémon with floppy ears, leaves, feathers, antennae, wings, or other flexible features, the chart usually measures to the top of the solid, substantial part of the head or body instead of the tallest decorative feature.

The goal is not to replace the official height, but to make the artwork compare naturally at the size it appears to occupy.
